Why Choose a Hot Work Habitat for Petrochemical Facilities?

In the energy industry, safe and efficient operation are top priorities. As a refinery, FPSO, oil rig, or any other petrochemical facility ages the need for safety-critical maintenance increases. At the same time the risk of flammable releases increases with aging seals and pipework unfortunately. This means that both hot work tasks and flammable releases are likely to be more common.

To maintain or improve these facilities hot work tasks such as welding, grinding, and burning are necessary. Carrying out these tasks in a potentially explosive atmosphere carries a high risk though, including fires and explosions.

When trying to mitigate the risks of these types of tasks it is important to consider if the risk can be mitigated by elimination or substitution, for instance replacing a welded joint with a bolted joint. However, in some circumstances avoiding hotwork is not possible.

Key features:

Modular and Flexible Design: Constructed from anti-static and flame-retardant materials, the Cairn Cocoon is adaptable and can be installed around any part of your energy facility, providing a robust barrier against ignition sources and flammable atmospheres.

Pressurization for Safety: The habitat is maintained at a pressure of at least 25pa using a portable fan, ensuring that flammable gases cannot infiltrate through the habitat panels or openings. An air lock system maintains pressure during entry and exit, further preventing gas ingress.

Advanced Control System: Our sophisticated control system continuously monitors for flammable gases, toxic gases, oxygen depletion or enrichment, pressure, high temperatures, and airflow within and around the habitat. It automatically shuts down hot work tools in case of an alarm condition, and provides visual and audible alerts to ensure immediate awareness and action.

Customizable Modules: The modular nature of our control system allows for the integration of additional devices such as gas detectors, emergency stops, and alarms, tailored to meet specific project risks and challenges.

Ensure safety and efficiency in your hot work projects with the Cairn Cocoon Welding Habitat. Learn more about our welding habitats on our products page and discover how we can support your hot work project requirements.

about us

about us

Cairn Safety Technology was founded in 2022 with the mission of improving safety in the worlds most hazardous areas.

Our team have over 50 years of combined experience in hazardous area equipment and pressurised habitats. Our goal was to create a pressurised habitat system that was easy to use, lightweight, ergonomic and had comprehensive safety features and best in class certification. We believe our habitat is the best in the world on those metrics.

Our design philosophy was to maximise simplicity and flexibility. Our second generation equipment has brought us closer to that goal but we believe in continuous improvement and will always strive to deliver a better product and service.

Ensuring safety through:

The habitat system meets and exceeds the requirements of European and International hazardous area standards. Meeting these standard ensures safe operation in Zone 1 hazardous areas. The reliability of the system has been 3rd party verified as exceeding SIL2 requirements.

The Cairn Cocoon habitat system has been type examined by a notified body. The hotwork habitat is certified for the UK, European and International Markets. The habitat system is ATEX, UKEX and IECEx certified and complies with EN 50381:2004 and IEC 60079-13:2017.

Cairn Safety Technology has an accredited quality system that meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2018 and IEC ISO 80079-34:2018.

We continuously monitor and improve our quality procedures and targets. Cairn Safety Technology has been awarded a UKEX Quality Assurance Notification (QAN), ATEX QAN, and IECEx Quality Assurance Report (QAR).

The expert project engineering team, HSE team and Habitat installers identify work scope risks. This can be from Hazids, Hazops and Job site Risk Assessments. Comprehensive internal reviews ensure we minimise human error in these processes.

Engineering professionals have designed the equipment.
Trained habitat technicians construct the Cocoon habitats.
Qualified project management professionals plan projects and design the welding habitat installations.
Qualified HSE professionals carry out any risk assessments.

During hot work, habitat technicians serve as independent safety leaders, empowered to halt work if unsafe conditions arise.
